Global Grant Scholar Checks in![]() On April 14th, Rotary Global Grant Scholar, Jaclyn Grace, provided an update on her university experience at the club's virtual meeting. Jaclyn is in her first year of studies in Peace and Conflict Resolution at Oxford University in the United Kingdom, and managing her academics in the midst of the COVID19 environment. She and her husband have been welcomed into the university and Rotary environment, which is rich with other Rotary scholars. Jaclyn has had to modify her summer in-field plans and is now pursuing research around influences and motivational factors of extremist groups. Her goals are to better understand not only those factors that motivate people to pursue extremist activities, but also the elements of communities that provide counterbalance and resistance to those tendencies. We wish Jaclyn continue success in her studies. |

The event was supported by fellow Rotarians from the Rotary Clubs of Mount Vernon, Metro Bethesda, and Alexandria Central. In addition, the group was honored with the presence of Rotarian Bill Euille, former Alexandria City Mayor (2003-2016). The President of the RCCH, Roxanne Suratgar, thanked the club members and fellow Rotarians for participating and making the evening a success and expressed a desire that the event be the first of many events where clubs both sides of the Potomac River collaborate. A special thanks goes to our host, to Diane Rish for managing the Silent Auction and Kip Knutson for welcoming the guests. President Elect Discusses Girls' Education
Posted by David Sterling on May 13, 2018
![]() During the District conference held earlier this month Roxanne Suratgar, President elect of our club joined forces with Anand Seth and Tariq Husain to give a presentation on the importance of girls’ education highlighting not only the moral importance of giving girls equal access to education but also the economic benefits. While progress has been made in early education much still needs to be done to continue rebalancing education through high school to university and the jobs market. A key take away was the importance not only of the large high profile projects but also some smaller projects such as transport scholarships or access to clean water which allows girls to collect water before returning home (a task which would otherwise take them away from attending school) or bathrooms with locks.... simple things with a major impact. Girls’ education is a core interest of our club which has been fund raising to provide classroom supplies to a girls’s school in collaboration with the Rotary Club of Herat Afghanistan. |

Support a Good Cause for Dupont Circle Rotary Club at Trivia Night
Posted by David Sterling on Feb 10, 2018
![]() Join our Rotary colleagues on Sunday, February 25 when the Rotary Club of Dupont Circle (RCDC) will host their 6th annual trivia fundraiser from 1:30-4:30pm at Stoney’s on L, 2101 L St. NW, Washington, DC.
Partnering with the Vicente Ferrer Foundation, the Dupont Circle RC will use proceeds from trivia night to buy bicycles that will support education in India. In rural areas of India, more than 60% of children drop out of school after 5th grade. One hundred million children of school age do not attend school, and the literacy rate of girls from marginalized groups is below 35%. Many students support family businesses and cannot spend more than an hour to travel to and from school—but access to bikes makes the commute possible.
In recent years, this project has provided bikes for 7,000 girls in rural India. Since receiving bikes, 75% of those students attend 90% of the classes in schools that are more than three miles away from their home. The village of Narpala has 127 marginalized students in need of bikes. RCDC plans to raise the funds needed to purchase bikes for these children, and trivia night is the opening event for this campaign. |

Herat Rotary Club President Inspires Educational Change
Posted by David Sterling on Nov 20, 2017
Somaye Sarvarzade, President of the Rotary Club of Herat, and Education Officer at UNICEF, gave an inspiring insight into current challenges and potential of education in Afghanistan. Ms. Sarvarzade spoke of an education project that her Rotary Club is actively pursuing to improve the security and high dropout rates of young girls in Herat. The project not only restores school buildings and security walls, but also trains teachers and expands curriculum for students. Influenced by supportive parents and her own experiences as a refugee, Ms. Sarvarzade demonstrates "Service Above Self" in the educational development initiatives she pursues -- from speaking to parents and children in remote villages, to supporting policy and planning efforts through UNICEF and the Ministry of Education, to providing after school reading clubs for students. Ms. Sarvarzade's passion for education was influenced by a USAID mentor to put her energies to creative use. She believes that Afghan people themselves must drive the change needed to sustain progress in educating the country's next generation. We look forward to lending a hand in those efforts. |

The organization also provides wrap-around support services and programs to keep Vets on the road to independent living. Their greatest success has been finding and securing permanent housing via subsidies with local and federal funds. US VETS is looking to raise funds to expand their Case Management support services and is open to partnering with Rotary. In addition, it provides opportunities for each Rotarian to match the initial investment in the Rotary Foundation of $26.50 and to PolioPlus!

Dr. Robert Oelrichs shares polio immunization insights
Posted by David Sterling on Oct 04, 2015
Dr. Robert Oelrichs of The World Bank’s Health, Nutrition and Prevention Global Practice shared his insights on polio immunization. Dr. Oelrichs has worked extensively with governments in developing countries to strengthen and expand their immunization programs. Polio, which is an endemic disease in developing country population, requires robust and vigilant monitoring by medical staff. Routine immunization, a basic health capacity, is needed to ensure no cases are seen for several years. This is a significant challenge in countries such as Pakistan, where a diverse population with pockets of deep poverty exist. Even with the significant funding by Rotary and others ($5.5B over the past 10 years), implementing polio vaccination continues to be a nagging issue due to strains on the field medical teams and competing requirements of routine immunization for other diseases.
Keys to success with polio immunization are tied to strengthening public health systems and transferring lessons learned to local teams in a sustainable fashion. Channeling funding through organizations such as the Gavi Alliance 2000 and central governments to establish routine, on-going immunization programs will be critical.
Thank you, Dr. Oelrichs for your insights and passion.

InStove shares insights on growing a non-profit
Posted by David Sterling on Sep 20, 2015
Former Dupont Circle Rotary member and InStove.org board member, Miel Hendrickson, and her colleague, InStove CEO Adam Creighton, shared their story about growing their non-profit. Based in Portland, OR, InStove builds and sells the most efficient institutional rocket stove in the world. The stoves are targeted to the developing world, particularly African nations, where 1 in 3 people cook over open fires. Using the InStove stove, users can get 50% return on the wood or other fuels used. This amounts to saving resources -- up to 16 logging trucks worth of lumber over a 1 year period. It also significantly impacts the lifestyle of women as they no longer spend as much time gathering wood, and cook in environments that are safer and less toxic.
Having created a complementary for-profit entity, InStove now serves 27 countries and has extended its portfolio to include a water pasteurizing and autoclave capability. In addition, their Stove-in-a-Box and training services allows this technology to be taught and built in local communities. Partners such as the World Health Organization are promoting its use in relief and crisis areas. InStove is working with Rotary Clubs to utilize their product in projects affecting water and sanitation and welcomes new opportunities to apply their capability.

Transformation Training for Polio Eradication - Sep 22nd

END POLIO NOW Annual Training Fundraiser
September 22, 2015
Conflict Transformation: A New Approach to Peace
Transforming Conflict in business, community service and personal life
Date: Tuesday, September 22, 2015
Time: 8:30am – 4:30pm
Location: Charlestown Retirement Center’s
Erickson Conference Center in Catonsville 715 Maiden Choice Lane, Catonsville, MD 21228
Investment: $125/person
Rotary District 7620, Conflict Transformation Associates (CTA) and Erickson Living Charlestown are teaming up to eradicate polio.
Join us September 22 for a full day of transformational training. CTA is donating a full day of training to Rotary District 7620. This transformational training retails at $3,500/day but is offered for only $125. Learn how to transform the conflict in your life while supporting the noble cause: End Polio Now.
The cost of the workshop is $125, and because the venue, lunch, and the trainers, have all donated their services, every penny of your registration fee will go to eradicate polio. If you register before September 1st, you will get double Paul Harris recognition points towards your next Paul Harris Fellow recognition level. We have a capacity of 220 seats, so if we sell out the event we will raise $27,500. But the news gets better. Because every dollar we raise is matched two for one by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, our total raise for polio eradication for the day will be $82,500.
About the Training
Success in business and life depends on our ability to effectively communicate. One major barrier to effective communication is our inclination to avoid conflict which often means to avoid having a difficult conversation. In this interactive workshop, participants will learn the philosophy and practice the tools of conflict transformation. Participants will discover how to handle the inevitable conflict that arises daily in the work place and learn techniques to turn a potentially heated conversation into a powerful and productive one.

Mennonites Work to Bring Relief and Peace to Conflict Zones
Posted by David Sterling on Aug 16, 2015
![]() Chris Zehr, Legislative Assistant for International Affairs of the Mennonite Central Committee, shared insights on efforts to bring disaster relief, development and reconciliation to conflict areas. The MCC is a relief, service, and peace agency representing fifteen Mennonite, Brethren in Christ and Amish bodies in North America. Their advocacy offices in Washington, DC and Ottawa lobby legislators on issues related to systemic causes of poverty and conflict raised by the 520 partners and 729 projects across 60 countries.
MCC and partner international relief efforts include distribution of food and hygiene kits as well as educating communities on disaster prevention. Development activities are focused on improving access to food and healthcare, while peace initiatives target justice advocacy, healing and conflict resolution. MCC also offers youth one year service projects in specific countries working with local partners. MCC domestic policy focuses on criminal/restorative justice, reducing gun violence.
Country-specific policies stem from addressing issues that local partners face. For example, in Haiti the MCC advocates for better housing policy, elimination of housing eviction, and addressing permanent and adequate housing for affected peoples. Water and sanitation improvement efforts are also a focus encouraging the Haitian and US governments to tackle major efforts to prevent cholera and other water-borne diseases. As a result, MCC has also pushed Congress for greater transparency of US aid agencies.

Rotarian Clarence Tsimpo shares his Rotary story
Posted by David Sterling on Aug 02, 2015
Clarence Tsimpo, RCCH member from Cameroon, shared his background and interest in Rotary with the club. He studied mathematics and computer science at the University of Yaounde in Cameroon before joining the Ministry of Finance. While at the ministry, Clarence became a core member of a national survey team. As an adjunct to the survey, he and his colleagues began a training program across Cameroon helping government workers learn Microsoft products. Based on these successes, Clarence attended the University of Montreal and continued to support the survey which was now sponsored by The World Bank. After receiving his PhD, he joined The World Bank in 2010 and has been training teachers and educators across Africa. While working in the field with teachers, Clarence found an interest in water and sanitation issues that matched Rotary goals and decided to become a Rotarian.

Expert Discusses Nepal Earthquake Response
Posted by David Sterling on Jun 28, 2015
![]() Corrie Kramer, water, sanitation and hygiene expert for Plan International, shared her insights on the recent Nepal earthquake emergency response. There have been over 100 small and large earthquakes across Nepal over the past month affecting millions of people. Immediate distribution of water and sanitation support was needed and remains an ongoing need. Point-of-use water treatment was a focus as much of the sanitation infrastructure was destroyed. In addition, road access was a problem with the hill area of Nepal barring the brunt of the earthquakes. Assistance varies widely as access to homes and roads are tenuous and lack of electricity is hampering progress. Military helicopters along with local assistance has been most effective in delivering assistance.
The next steps for WASH efforts include getting markets access and commerce up and running; determining what structures are habitable; and quickly addressing shelter before the beginning of rainy season (monsoons) begin. This includes taking steps to counter the high potential outbreaks of cholera and other water-borne diseases.

Former Capitol Hill Staffer Discusses Bringing Legislation to Life
Posted by David Sterling on Jun 14, 2015
Former Capitol Hill staffer and Chief-of-Staff, John Ariale, delivered an overview of bringing the 529-ABLE legislation to life over the course of several years. The purpose of the 529-ABLE Act is to provide a tax‐deferred savings vehicle for persons with disabilities. It would help those with disabilities and their parents and caregivers, allowing them to put money into tax-deferred savings plans like the 529 plans that parents use to save for college. 529-ABLE accounts would be especially helpful for parents who have a child with disabilities that require intensive, expensive forms of care and wonder what will happen after they die.
Mr. Ariale now leads Ariale Strategies, a consulting firm that supports non-profits and small businesses. Thank you, John, for your insights.

Hunger Project expert shares NGO's insights on empowerment
Posted by David Sterling on Jun 06, 2015
John Ariale with RCCH member Kip Knudson
John Ariale, owner of Ariale Stretgies and core member of the NGO, Hunger Project, shared insights on how local empowerment of communities can lead to significant reductions in poverty. The Hunger Project is an NGO delivering programs globally that focus on eradicating hunger in Africa and Asia. With just $20M in funding, this NGO has impacted over 20M people through its process of empowerment and volunteerism within communities and clustering of networked villages. Its efforts have demonstrated significant gains in poverty alleviation provided evidence for altering misconceptions about world hunger and poverty.
Often, we have misconceptions of global hunger and poverty. The reality is that acute malnutrition has dropped significantly around the global. Today, global hunger is more likely to be seen as young women with young families attempting to grow food on marginal land with poor channels to market and support systems. Extreme poverty (based on Millennium goals) has been cut in half. However, new goals set by international members of the Millennium Challenge are harder and require greater coordination between governments, development banks and NGOs.
The projects follow a community engagement model that includes the following: 1) start with women within the community and seek ways to transform gender relationships; 2) break the mindset of dependency by mobilizing women to actively change their surroundings; and 3) address local government factors and barriers that impact women's lives within a walking radius (often within 10 miles). Actions and activities that free up time for women to focus on health and education are critical. This includes the community building epicenter structures that can house food banks, crop fields, meeting halls, rural banks, clean water wells, public latrines, health centers, food processing units and/or classrooms. Community leaders and volunteers become a key growth factor in this transformation.
The Epicenter Strategy has shown to be a good model to address many of the on-going causes of systemic poverty and other NGOs have adopted similar methods. The challenge going forward will be providing an integrated approach across NGO projects that can leverage knowledge and approaches while extending support reach to rural communities.

World Bank health officer speaks to RCCH members![]() Meaghen Quinlan-Davidson, Health Officer and Consultant to The World Bank, spoke to members of the RCCH regarding studies of the impact of child marriages on country economies. Ms. Quinlan-Davidson outlined the studies' purpose, approach and tools used to quantify the effects of early (pre-adult) marriages practiced in select African and South Asian countries. The economic model and approach allows The World Bank to engage governments in policy discussions on alternative programs that can create incentives for communities to change their cultural practices.
The World Bank has used this model to pilot a number of programs in countries such as Nigeria to demonstrate the economic tradeoffs of child marriages. These include lost income due to lower education and increased population effects. The Bank is encouraged by the programs' progress in highlighting behavior changes and looks to expand its model usage across Africa.
Thank you to Meaghen and Quentin Wodon for sharing their insights and perspectives on this research and their linkages to Rotary's initiatives involving community development, education and healthcare.

Calvary Women's Services addresses homelessness, mental illness
Posted by David Sterling on May 03, 2015
![]() ![]() Lisa Buchs and Elaine Johnson, coordinators for Calvary Women's Services -- a DC non-profit with facilities in Anacostia, addressed the RCCH about their mission and volunteer engagements. The non-profit serves women ages 31 to 50 facing homelessness, drug addiction, mental illness and domestic violence with a mission of offering "a safe, caring place for tonight; support, hope and change for tomorrow." The CWS programs include a transitional housing program, chronic illness programs with special focus on addiction recovery services, and permanent housing. CWS works with the DC government, other charities and private organizations to provide health, employment and education services to their target women segment. This includes courses in financial literacy and money management.
CWS currently serves 120 women per year and has one of the lowest case management ratios in the metro area. As a result, 70% of their clients are able to move into their own homes after the CWS program administration. While CWS is looking to expand their facilities services, opportunities to volunteer are varied and available. For more information, see www.calvaryservices.org for more details.

Energy Experts Share Insights on Sector Info, Policy and Trends
Posted by David Sterling on Jan 26, 2015
The Rotary Club of Capitol Hill hosted the 2015 Energy Panel Summit at the National Guard Museum on Monday, January 26th. Thank you to our panel of experts on energy policy, information and new trends for sharing their insights on oil production, consuming sectors and renewables -- and for answering our questions on why gas prices remain less than a cup of Starbuck's coffee today...and other baffling dynamics! Natalie Joubert, Vice President, Policy of the Consumer Energy Alliance discussed the four main consuming energy sectors in the US -- Industrial, Transportation, Residential and Commercial. In particular, how the US has become more efficient in the amount of energy consumed versus previous decades while energy costs have risen. These trends play a major role in how policies are developed by the Consumer Energy Alliance and policy makers as they consider the impacts of rising costs on lower income Americans. District 7620 Focused on Continuing Polio Eradication
Posted by David Sterling on Aug 02, 2014
In the August edition of Rotary District 7620 Foundation's Engage! newsletter, Rotary's emphasis is on continuing the final push to eradicate polio. With polio reemerging in three difficult to address countries -- Pakistan, Nigeria and Afghanistan -- and a resurgence in Somalia and the Middle East, the push to eliminate polio for good is critical. Year-to-date in 2014 there have been 128 reported cases of Wild Poliovirus, with Pakistan recording the greatest number (99). District 7620 efforts are focused on fundraising and giving through the Rotary Foundation. DG Bill Fine is encouraging Rotarians to invite area business owners and sales professionals to participate in a Sandler Training program on October 15th at the Charlestown Retirement Center in Cantonsville, MD. The program is designed to help Rotarians and invited guests to raise money for polio eradication with all proceeds going to the Rotary and Gates Foundations' efforts to End Polio Now! Program participants will benefit from a full-day sales training course designed to address three areas necessary for sales success -- attitude, behavior and technique. Other efforts within the Rotary District include encouraging 10% foundation giving, which can be done online. For details see Engage! magazine, August 2014 or contact Ken Solow, Annual Programs Fund Chair at ksolow@pinnacleadvisory.com.

Welcome from the Club President
Posted by Charles Charpentier on Jun 30, 2013
![]() Welcome to the Rotary Club of Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C. Our club was founded in 2003 and this year we are celebrating our first decade of Service Above Self.
Together with our club’s Foundation, the Rotary Club of Capitol Hill Foundation, our club is involved in local and international service projects that give back to our local and global communities. We have provided backpacks and school supplies to students in need, provided grants ranging from $250 to $5,000 to local nonprofits, handed out dictionaries to 3rd graders in the public and charter schools on Capitol Hill, built water wells in Bolivia, provided bed nets and malaria medication in Mali, and volunteered at the Capital Area Food Bank.
As one of three Rotary clubs in Washington D.C. (and the only breakfast meeting) we welcome visitors from around the world every week at our meetings. Since most of our members, guests and speakers are working in or visiting our Nation's Capital, we find that having a morning meeting located at Union Station is extremely convenient for those who would like to begin a busy day of work or sightseeing with fellowship and service.
But we are not all just early birds who rush off to work at the sound of the closing bell, we regularly attend fellowship and social events including happy hours and End Polio Nights at National's Park and the Verizon Center.
Our club meets Tuesdays at 7:15 a.m. at Uno Chicago Grill, Union Station (2nd Floor), 50 Massachusetts Ave., N.E., Washington, D.C. 20001. We look forward to welcoming you to our meetings, service events, and happy hours soon.
Yours in Rotary Service,

RCCH and SAWA International Convention Walk Against Malaria
Posted by Charles Charpentier on May 25, 2013
![]() This Rotary year the Rotary Club of Capitol Hill was the primary sponsor of the Walk Against Malaria organized by the SAWA International Convention. On Saturday, May 25, 2013, members of the Rotary Club of Capitol Hill club joined other in the District of Columbia to walk 2.2 miles from Galvez Park, near the U.S. State Department to Lafayette Park, across from the White House, to help raise awareness of the impact of Malaria on the global population in general and the African population specifically. According to the World Health Organization's 2012 World Malaria Report, Malaria is a preventable and treatable mosquito-borne disease, whose main victims are children under five years of age in Africa. The World Health Organization estimates that there were about 219 million cases of Malaria in 2010 and an estimated 660,000 deaths from Malaria. Africa is the most affected continent: about 90% of all malaria deaths occur in Africa.
In 2012, the SAWA International Convention served 363,900 individuals with Malaria and of those served approximately 250,000 were children under the age of five. According to the SAWA International Convention 1 in 5 childhood deaths are cause by Malaria in Africa and 10,000 pregnant women and 200,000 infants die from Malaria in Africa each year. The SAWA International Convention estimates that Malaria costs African governments more than $12 Billion lost GDP every year. The Rotary Wheel – A Rolling History
Posted by Charles Charpentier on May 21, 2013
![]()
A wheel has been the symbol of Rotary International since earliest days. The first design was made in 1905 by Chicago Rotarian Montague Bear, an engraver who drew a simple wagon wheel, with a few lines to show dust and motion. The wheel was said to illustrate "Civilization and Movement." Most of the early clubs had some form of wagon wheel on their publications and letterheads. Finally, in 1922, it was decided that all Rotary clubs should adopt a single design as the exclusive emblem of Rotarians. Thus, in 1923, the present gear wheel, with 24 cogs and six spokes was adopted by the "Rotary International Association." A group of engineers advised that the geared wheel was mechanically unsound and would not work without a "keyway" in the center of the gear to attach it to a power shaft. So, in 1923 the keyway was added and the design which we now know was formally adopted as the official Rotary International emblem. |

Why participate in Every Rotary Every Year (EREY)?
Posted by Polly Binns on Apr 14, 2013
The donations you provide as a participant in Every Rotarian Every Year, also known as the Annual Fund, makes it possible for Rotary clubs to transform lives worldwide. The Annual Fund is the primary source of funding for Foundation activities. The Annual Fund’s unique three-year investment cycle gives clubs time to plan high-impact, sustainable activities and the Foundation time to invest the contributions. These investment earnings help cover the Foundation’s administrative and fundraising expenses. Our contributions are joined with donations from other district clubs and are held at Rotary International for three years. Then, the funds are returned to the District to support matching District Designated grants. Your generous support funds local and international projects that advance The Rotary Foundation’s mission. All contributions to the fund are spent on quality Rotary projects. Help support these projects. Make a contribution today.
The Rotary Club of Capitol Hill has one of the highest contribution per member ratio in the District. It is a proud tradition we hope everyone will support. The Every Rotarian, Every Year (EREY) initiative encourages all Rotary club members to help us reach our goal to support The Rotary Foundation financially each year. Rotary's: Worldwide 20102-2013 EREY fundraising goal (Annual Fund goal) is US$120 million. |

Posted by Polly Binns on Jan 26, 2013
One World Education just became adopted by DC Public School (DCPS) as their only high school writing program to be used district wide during the 2013-2014 school year. This partnership expands our work from a program to enhance the curriculum to a staple part of it. Through this partnership, our programs will serve 5000 students - every 9th and 10th grade student - and approximately 150 teachers. The support of the Rotary Club will now reach every public school student in DC schools. |

AUGUST IS MEMBERSHIP AND EXTENSION MONTH
Posted by Barbara Carter on Jul 29, 2012
On July 1st, the Rotary Club of Capitol Hill and the Rotary Club of Dupont Circle shared an outstanding evening. We began our 2012-13 Rotary year with the installation of our new officers and board members. We were hosted by Jimi Thompson III, a charter member of the Rotary Club of Capitol Hill, at the historic National Capitol Bank. An aura of excitement and expectation filled the room.
President Greg Roberts set as his main goal to grow the club to 35 members. This would be a net gain of 10 members. The Membership Committee joins Greg and the Board of Directors in challenging our members to take the Rotary Membership Challenge. This year, our members are invited to take part in two activities designed to help us remember why we joined Rotary, what keeps us coming back, and why others should join. First, we are invited to take the Rotary Membership Challenge. With this, each of us will commit to sponsor a new member, tell a friend or colleague about our club projects or volunteer to serve as a mentor to prospective or new members. Second, participate in the first-ever Rotary Moment Tweet Day on August 14th. Let’s tweet about our favorite Rotary memory or event, talk about our club activities, or share one of our community service projects (i.e., the upcoming Book Bag or Dictionary Project). For those of us who are not on Twitter, for Rotary’s sake, create a Twitter account and post your first tweet. Your Membership Committee members are David Falke, Susie Komornik, Mark Evans, and Phil Viles. Barbara Carter 2012-13 Membership Committee Chair |

Rotary Curling Fellowship World Championships
Posted by Sean McAlister on Apr 01, 2012

The International Curling Fellowship of Rotarians has been holding this gathering every two years since gaining its Rotary International status in 1972. The countries that participate in this curling competition include Canada, New Zealand, Norway, Russia, South Africa, Scotland, Sweden, England, and the United States.
This was the first time ever that the mid-Atlantic area of the United States has hosted this international competition, and the Rotary Club of Capitol Hill was part of this effort. Club members volunteered their time to prepare meals and host these visiting athletes. It was a fun event for both the international curlers and the members of the Rotary Club of Capitol Hill. |

Club Wins the 2011-2012 Governor's Gold Award
Posted by Sean McAlister on Mar 29, 2012
The Rotary Club of Capitol Hill was one of just six clubs (out of 68 Rotary Clubs) to win the 2011-2012 Governor's Gold Award during the 2012 District Conference in Cambridge, MD. This is the highest award a Rotary Club can win in its District.
From July 2011 to March 2012, the club membership had an awesome year. The membership hosted three very successful fundraisers for local DC service projects and Rotary’s fight against Polio. In fact, we raised three times more money this year than we did in the past 8 years! For the second time in two years, the Rotary Club of Capitol Hill participated in Rotary International’s Future Vision Program for Humanity Service. The membership partnered with Rotary District 1990 (Southern Germany) and raised $90,000 (USD) to send German graduate students to Washington, D.C. to study peace and conflict resolution for two years. The Rotary Club of Capitol Hill was also recognized as the number one Rotary Club in North America for selecting and sponsoring Rotary Peace Fellows. Since 2006, the club has sponsored 12 Peace Fellows, and during this Rotary year we sponsored two additional Fellows. Peace Fellows are scholars sponsored by Rotary International. They are leaders in promoting national and international cooperation and conflict resolution through service activities. Participants in this program earn either a master’s degree in international relations, public administration, sustainable development, peace studies, conflict resolution, or a related field, or a professional development certificate in peace and conflict resolution in at one of seven Rotary International Peace Centers in Argentina, Australia, Japan, Sweden, Thailand, the United Kingdom, and the United States. But the Rotary Club of Capitol Hill’s biggest accomplishment this year was sponsoring the Rotary Club of Dupont Circle (Washington, DC), which chartered on March 27, 2012 with 37 new Rotarians. |

"Fair To All Concerned??"
Posted by Barbara Carter on Feb 07, 2012
On Tuesday, February 6, our presenter was Chris Matthews, a peace and justice advocate from Foundry United Methodist Church. Matthews gave us some background information on what it means for a product to be labeled/certified Fair Trade. She emphasized that with fair trade, the farmers receive a living wage for their products i.e. cocoa, coffee and tea. In many countries where these raw products are grown, there is often little concern for the use of pesticides or for the impact on the environment. |

Posted by Sean McAlister on Sep 12, 2011
![]()
After 20 years of hard work, Rotary International and its partners are on the brink of eradicating this tenacious disease, but a strong push is needed now to root it out once and for all. It is a window of opportunity of historic proportions. Your contribution to the Rotary Foundation will help Rotary raise $200 million to match $355 million in challenge grants received from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. The resulting $555 million will directly support immunization campaigns in developing countries, where polio continues to infect and paralyze children, robbing them of their futures and compounding the hardships faced by their families.
As long as polio threatens even one child anywhere in the world, children everywhere remain at risk. The stakes are that high.
Please watch this five minute Rotary vidhttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nMNPHTV6Z30eo to learn what you can do to end polio in the life of a child.
